Erika V. Chan

(she/her/they/them)

Family law is an area of law that I care deeply about because it deals with some of the most precious and significant parts of a peoples’ lives: their children, their homes, their relationships, and their ability to move on past the messy emotions that follow a painful separation.

Children’s Aid Society involvement can have serious consequences. Too often, marginalized families are failed by this system. I am passionate about advocating for parents or caregivers who face an imbalance of power against these institutional bodies.

I am an excellent communicator, mindful practitioner and take pride in the high quality of my legal work. I am committed to social justice, collective liberation and anti-oppressive values in my practice and actively work to be accountable to the communities I serve.

I truly believe that a settlement focused approach serves clients’ holistic well-being. However, if the opposing side is unreasonable and the separation is high conflict, I am not afraid of a fight

Getting More Personal

I am a second-generation immigrant settler and was born and raised in the traditional territories of the Stó:lō people, the Semá:th First Nation and Mathxwí First Nation (learn about whose land you are on here). I moved to Tkaronto in 2015 and now call it home.

During my free time, I enjoy cuddles with my adopted cat Dindy, dance, supporting the arts community, and travel. I am passionate about sex worker rights, combatting gender based violence, and access to justice.

I am a member of the Family Law Association and Law Union of Ontario. Along with my individual case work, I work as Duty Counsel for Legal Aid Ontario and volunteer with the 519 Legal Clinic.
